Just in time for family time during the holidays – My TOP 5 Football Movies!
I love watching movies, and I especially enjoy a great story. I have seen other good football movies, but these 5 are my all-time favorite.
Full Disclosure: You are getting recommendations from a mom who teaches at a university and has an online business. This Top 5 Movie List not a list from a movie critic or male football guru. Ha – so you know these movies are good!
1. Rudy – 1993, Rated PG
Rudy has always been told that he was too small to play college football. But he is determined to overcome the odds and fulfill his dream of playing for Notre Dame.
I can watch this movie over and over again. Hard work triumphs over obstacles and all of the people who told Rudy “no”. Rudy has relentless effort, and it is very inspiring!
2. We Are Marshall – 2006, Rated PG
When a plane crash claims the lives of members of the Marshall University football team and some of its fans, the team’s new coach and his surviving players try to keep the football program alive.
Matthew McConaughey is phenomenal as the new Marshall University coach. Be prepared to cheer for the underdogs!
3. Draft Day – 2014, Rated R
At the NFL Draft, general manager Sonny Weaver has the opportunity to rebuild his team when he trades for the number one pick. He must decide what he’s willing to sacrifice on a life-changing day for a few hundred young men with NFL dreams.
Surprisingly, this movie is extremely well written and very interesting. Kevin Costner delivers as usual with plot twists and turns that will keep you on your seat.
4. The Blind Side – 2009, Rated PG-13
The story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All-American football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family.
Sandra Bullock plays the part of a southern women like no other actress could! A great story with great acting. A feel-good movie with a happy ending.
5. Remember the Titans – 2000, Rated PG
The true story of a newly appointed African-American coach and his high school team on their first season as a racially integrated unit.
Denzel Washington is a marvelous actor and leads this movie to my Top 5 list. The theme of the movie could be difficult, but a group of young men learn to get along in a newly integrated school. Lots of good football too!
Honorable Mention: Necessary Roughness – 1991, Rated PG-13
Due to NCAA sanctions, the Texas State University Fightin’ Armadillos must form a football team from their actual student body, with no scholarships to help, to play their football schedule. With fewer players than most teams, the makeshift team must overcome obstacles that the best teams in the country couldn’t deal with. The team is made up of a 34-year-old quarterback, a female placekicker and a gang of misfits.
This movie deserved an Honorable Mention because it’s a fun movie! Can’t go wrong with this light, easy to watch movie.
