Online Business Step 2

Simply wanting an online business or at home business isn’t enough to be successful.

You must decide if an online business is right for you. There are 2 main areas to explore that will guide you to making the best decision:

  1. Obstacles
  2. Priorities

By going through this brief exercise, you will have a better understanding of how to navigate through your personal obstacles and priorities.

Simply wanting an online business or at home business isn’t enough to be successful.

1. OBSTACLES

From my personal experiences, obstacles normally fall within 3 categories

  1. Time – will you have time to be a part of an online business
  2. Skills – do you have the skills or can you learn the skills needed for an online business
  3. Support – Will you have the support from those you live with or those who are in your sphere of influence

TIME

How do you spend your time?

  • Write down every obstacle, event, obligation
  • Write down what you do on a daily, weekly basis

Analyze How You Spend Your Time

  • Determine what can fall off your “little red wagon” – Things you can say NO to.
  • Helps the decide the things you don’t need to do anymore

SKILLS

Skills may be harder to identify at this point because you may not know what skills you will need for your online business / at home business.

I’m fortunate that in my business, we teach the skills you need to be successful. So the training is embedded in the business. It’s a 90% done for you business that has the skills, mentorship – everything you need to be successful online.

SUPPORT

This is an area where so many of us struggle. Often we do not get the support that we need from our friends or family.

The biggest piece of advice that I can give you about support is to include your spouse or significant other in your venture.  Get them involved in what you’re doing.

It’s difficult for them to understand what you’re doing by just telling them. Invite them to be a part of a meeting so that your business makes more sense to them. If they say they don’t want to be involved, tell them, “I get it. But, it’s important to me that you have an idea of what I’m doing.” Invite them on this journey with you.

You may need to have the tough conversation with yourself…..Are you independent enough to still move forward with the support of your spouse, friends or family?

I’m most shocked by how little support is given to someone who wants to start an online business.

2. PRIORITIES

After you’ve identified your activities and obstacles, now it’s time to look at how to prioritize and rearrange your schedule to make this happen.

It’s not enough to have a great idea. It’s not enough to want it. You must decide what you are going to give up to make your business a success.

Think about times where you have rearranged your life for certain things you wanted. For example, if you wanted to:

  • Learn to play golf – had to give up sitting on the couch
  • Go to college – study time instead of hanging out with friends
  • Volunteer with a charity – had to give up 2 nights a month

Priority Levels

When you are examining priorities, you can think of them in terms of 3 areas:

  1. Non-negotiables – the things that you MUST do.
  2. Priorities – Organizations, Meetings, Friendships,
  3. NO / Not Now – Some of the items in the Priorities list may need to move to the NO list.

Seasons of Life

Rearranging your life does NOT mean it’s forever. It means that for this Season of Life, I must make my online business a priority.

In a year from now, I may have time for other priorities. But right now, in this Season of my Life, I choose to make the time for my online business.

You may not be able to be the room mom, be a volunteer for every organization or attend group meetings.  The items on your Priorities list may need to move to the “Not Now” list. It’s not forever, but for right now it is on the “Not Now” list.

What are you willing to move from the Priority list to the “Not Now” list?

You are going to remove something from your list. You will need to rearrange your life to a certain degree.  Just like you would need to rearrange your life if you decided to go back to school or take on a new job responsibility.

You are saying YES to the success of your online business.  You are saying YES to building a better life and future for yourself and family.

Step 3 of this process helps you look at the benefits of having an online business.
