Bad lighting can undo the best hair day and make your look bad, no matter how good your makeup is.

It's not about "looking good". It's about Good Communication.

Keep in Mind for Your Videos:

✅ You don't have to be fancy. Simple Lighting is all you need.

Inexpensive lighting is enough.

✅ Keep in mind these basic suggestions.

Goals of lighting

  1.  To See You - For Good Communication, your face must be seen!

Lighting Does Not Have To Be Complicated

2 Types of Lighting & Simple Suggestions

  1. Man Made - Ring Light or Spot Light type lamp
  2. Natural - Sun Light Through a Window or Outdoors in the Shade

The set up for Basic Lighting Tips for Videos is shown in the image above.  A light (the natural sun light or a light) should be directed at the face. The light source should not be behind the person or to the side of the person. That's it. Don't complicate it. The video gives great examples too!

The video shows the 2 types of lights that I like to use. The ring light that I purchased from Amazon is PERFECT for my office. But, when I travel, I don't bring it along (it's too big!). Usually, I can find a small "spot light" type lamp to use that will display light directly on my face.

Bad  Lighting (See the Video for Examples)

1. Not  enough  lighting  on your  face

2. Light  BEHIND  you

3. Too  much  lighting  (direct  sunlight)

4. Uneven  lighting

Watch the video for more basic lighting tips for videos. Included in the video are examples of bad lighting too. Some of the most common mistakes that are seen in videos are people sitting in front of a window with the window BEHIND the person. Another common mistake is not having ENOUGH lighting on your face. In both scenarios, the face can not be seen clearly which then hinders effective communication.

You communicate with - Your Eyes - Your Words - Your Facial Expressions.

If you can't see your face, you are not communicating well!
